Devgad Beach

Devgad Beach

Can you think of Konkan without its spectacular coastline? Beautiful beaches are the true wealth of this region. How can Devgad be any different?

Devgad has a lovely beach that should be on the top of your list of places to visit in the city. If you are used to the crowded and often dirty beaches in cities like Mumbai or Goa, then the clean and peaceful Devgad beach will come across as a breath of fresh air.......literally!

The refreshing sea-breeze blowing across the infinite expanse of water will energize your spirit with ample amounts of Ozone. The breathtaking view of the vast ocean stretched to the horizon will soothe your senses and broaden your mind.

The lofty Suru (Cyprus) trees will welcome you at the very entrance to the sea-shore. The clear, blue and unpolluted sky, the crispy white sand, the roar of the gushing waves dashing relentlessly on the rocks and the coconut trees swaying to the tune of the ocean breeze will stay forever in your mind, even when you will return to your best devgad hotel room.

Devgad Windmills

While you are on the beach, you can see the eight gigantic windmills on top of a hillock to the south of the beach. The spiral stairs will take you to the hilltop so that you can take a closer look at these marvelous structures. The snow-white color of the windmills offers a wonderful contrast to the cloudy, grey monsoon sky. A picture-perfect view for your mobile cam!

Relax on the rocks while watching the stunning view of the sun slowly declining into the ocean spread to the horizon. Enjoy watching the fishing boats bobbing on the water surface looking like tiny toy-boats and the people on the beach below looking like small creatures crawling on the sand. You will get a spectacular bird’s eye view of the entire surrounding region including the creek and the thick forest.

Vijaydurg Fort

Vijaydurg Fort

Situated in the nearby small village named Girye, around 29 km from Devgad, is one of the biggest and oldest sea-forts in Maharashtra – the Vijaydurg fort. You can visit the fort from your Devgad hotel in a car, auto or a State Transport bus.

The 800 years old fort was built during the period of Raja (King) Bhoj around 1193-1205. It was later conquered by Shivaji Maharaj from Adil Shah of Bijapur in 1653. It is a stunning testimonial of the political genius of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is standing rock-solid against all foreign aggressions for centuries.

The 122 meters long, 3 meters tall and 7 meters thick wall (tatabandi) and a 200 meter underground tunnel from the fort to Dhulap’s palatial house are great architectural wonders you should not miss.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple

Known as ‘Konkan Kashi’, the beautiful Kunkeshwar temple is another place you will love to visit. If you are staying in a hotel in Devgad, the temple is just 16 km away. You can travel by car, auto rickshaw or a public transport bus from Devgad ST stand.

The legend goes that this temple, which is a Shiv Mandir (temple of Lord Shiva), was built as a memorabilia by a Muslim merchant who was miraculously saved from a ship-wreck near this shore.

The beautiful temple built alongside the beach closely resembles the South Indian style of temple architecture. There are caves nearby with carvings of male and female warriors in black rock.

So, if you are tired of visiting the same old overcrowded beaches in Goa and other such popular tourist destinations, these best places to visit in Devgad will prove to be a welcome change. The largely unexplored beauty of this small town with many tourist attractions in Konkan will make you fall in love with it and the memories of the fun will linger in your mind for a long time to come.
